Identifying Common Pests

It can be hard to tell pests apart. Sure you know an ant from a spider, but do you know the difference between a bed bug and a mite? A little education can go a long way when it comes to determining the right course of action. Below, we’ve provided a guide to recognizing some common intruders and understanding their telltale signs:

  • Scabies, microscopic mites belonging to the Sarcoptidae family, typically cause intense itching and manifest as small, itchy bumps or red rashes on the skin.

  • Mites, a diverse group of arachnids, can be identified by their minute size and may cause various and persistent skin irritations. Check out our comprehensive guide to mites for more detailed information.

  • Bed bugs, nocturnal insects of the Cimicidae family, leave behind small, itchy, red welts on the skin. Detecting an infestation involves meticulously examining bedding and furniture for small, reddish-brown bugs, especially in seams and crevices.

  • Ants, belonging to the Formicidae family, are easily recognized by their segmented bodies and distinctive antennae. Identifying an ant problem involves observing persistent trails, especially in areas with accessible food sources.

Oftentimes, people get confused between scabies and bed bugs. (It’s a particularly tricky one!) Here are some pro tips on how to tell the difference between bed bugs and scabies.

What’s so bad about bugs?

Why do you want to get rid of bugs anyway? Do they really pose a threat?

Beyond health concerns and potential allergic reactions, these tiny invaders can inflict oversized damage to your furniture and home. In addition, the psychological toll of living with critters can be overwhelming. Quick elimination not only ensures a healthier and more comfortable living environment but also prevents the potential financial costs associated with illness and replacing damaged items.

How to Get Rid of Common Household Bugs

Bed Bugs: In order to get rid of bed bugs you have to kill them at all life stages from egg to nymph to adult. Following these simple steps can help keep them at bay.

  • Regularly inspect bedding, furniture, and surrounding areas for signs of infestation.

  • Wash bedding and clothing in hot water.

  • Vacuum frequently, paying special attention to seams and crevices.

Scabies: Scabies mites are nearly impossible to see with the naked eye, making their presence difficult to detect before it’s too late. However, with a bit of diligence and thorough cleaning, you can significantly reduce the risk and stay in the clear.

  • Practice good personal hygiene and wash bedding regularly.

  • Avoid close contact with infected individuals and their belongings.

Mites: While most mites are harmless to humans, some can significantly disrupt your life. Preventing them from causing trouble involves good cleaning habits and acquiring effective strategies to fight back.

  • Maintain a clean living environment, regularly dusting and vacuuming.

  • Wash bedding, pillowcases, and curtains in hot water at least once a week.

  • Use allergen-proof bedding covers.

  • Keep the humidity in your home below 50%, as mites thrive in humid environments. Use dehumidifiers if necessary.

Ants: One tiny ant is all it takes to find unsealed food and introduce an entire swarm into your home. Fear not, here are a few effective ways to address possible ant invasions.

  • Seal cracks and openings in windows, doors, and walls.

  • Keep food stored in sealed containers.
